A little more about this project
Sacred Earth Trust has recently begun to protect and restore forest areas affected by fires.
The current situation
There is a critical need to restore the wilderness of Uttarakhand, which has been degraded as a result of deforestation, forest fires and invasive species, amongst other factors that are both human-induced and natural.
How Sacred Earth Trust is working on this
In a newly launched project, Sacred Earth Trust (SET) is recovering large areas of forest, in a bid to counter species loss (a global phenomenon where species are going extinct at 100 to 1000 times the normal rate, according to estimates) and the effects of climate change.
Their process involves:
Adopting a method called Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR): this is a simple, low-cost way to effectively convert deforested lands of degraded vegetation into more productive forests, by protecting and rehabilitating watersheds, and recovering native biodiversity.
Monitoring these areas to ensure their optimal survival and protecting them from forest fires.
Raising awareness amongst the local communities on tactics to prevent forest fires and regenerate degraded forests.
Engaging local communities in their ANR and forest-fire prevention work, thereby generating more livelihood opportunities.
